Not Enough Public Access Defibrillators Across Telford

Not Enough Public Access Defibrillators Across Telford

Recently whilst writing an earlier article on "Where Is My Nearest Defibrillator / AED?" I was shocked at how few Public Access Defibrillators are in and around Telford in Shropshire says SP's Managing Director Steve Bray.

As one of the largest suppliers of defibrillators in the UK, it's only right that we do something to proactively rectify this embarrassing and potentially life threatening situation.

It's no secret that the NHS is under huge pressure and this includes the ambulance services whose workload continues to grow year on year whilst at the same time facing substantial budget cuts.

The British Heart Foundation says "A cardiac arrest happens when your heart stops pumping blood around your body. If someone has suddenly collapsed, is not breathing normally and is unresponsive, they are in Sudden Cardiac Arrest."

In technical terms "An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm."

But we're not here to scare anyone or throw lots of technical jargon at you, in fact quite the opposite.

Our plan is simple:

  1. We are going to offer Telford based groups and organisations a heavily subsidised price on a Defib/AED with a Wall Mounted Cabinet as long as it's based within the local community and available for anyone to use. We are happy to explain to you about how public defibrillator schemes work.
  2. We are working with a number of local Community First Responders and professional first aid instructors who can offer you FREE training. You don't actually need training to use a defib, but we accept that most people would like to be given some face to face training in how to use one.
  3. We will register your defibrillator with the West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust who maintains a database of all defibs in public places. This means that if they receive a 999 call about a cardiac arrest in your area, they can tell the caller the location of the nearest defibrillator.
  4. We will hold your hand through the whole process, talking to your group or committee, advising on fundraising, helping with publicity.

What next:

  • Just drop me an email with your details and a brief introduction about your group or interest, and I will personally get back to you to discuss how we can help.
